In Europe, where more than 6 million vehicles are dismantled every year, the Directive 2000\/53\/EC requires that at least 95% of each vehicle\u2019s weight be recovered, with a minimum target of 85% for actual recycling. An ambitious goal that calls for<strong> increasingly advanced technologies<\/strong> and an industrial vision focused on <strong>sustainability and process efficiency<\/strong>.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/6&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;5\/6&#8243;][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;140112&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h4>What you can really recycle from a car<\/h4>\n<p>According to analyses of passenger vehicles, a modern car is composed on average of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelonthenet.com\/files\/automotive.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">75% metals<\/a>,\u00a0<strong>15% plastics<\/strong>, and the remainder of glass, rubber, fluids and electronic components. Ferrous\u00a0<strong>metals <\/strong>are efficiently separated through shredding and magnetic sorting, while the recovery of\u00a0<strong>non-ferrous<\/strong> metals, such as copper, aluminium and brass, requires more complex refining and separation processes. However, not everything that remains after shredding can be put to immediate use. As a matter of fact, the treatment generates a light fraction called\u00a0<strong>car fluff <\/strong>(or\u00a0<em>Automotive Shredder Residue &#8211; ASR<\/em>), consisting of plastics, fibres, foams, rubber residues and small metal particles, which, due to its heterogeneous composition, is one of the main obstacles to reaching the recovery targets imposed by regulations.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years,\u00a0<strong>the evolution of technologies\u00a0<\/strong>has made it possible to valorise this fraction as well, recovering additional quantities of metals and reducing the amount going to landfill.
